Fantastic snowshoe conditions, 25 degrees, a flat trail along the river. We quickly came upon the remnants of a huge dam (photo) that was breached in the late 1800s . This is not the same dam that caused the 1800s historic and catastrophic flood, rather it was breached to prevent that happening. At the same time, in Conway, a huge dam was breached for fear of the flooding that had caused so much death and destruction of Williamsburg lives, homes, and prosperous factories.
Although the snow is too deep to leave good animal tracks, we think we found weasel tracks.
Some amusing signage, and a lovely little covered bridge came next. We had fun exploring the bridge, and looking out its window at the amazing river below it.Because of the very deep snowfalls lately, the rocks in the river had taken on really unusual shapes – rather like giant marshmallows , eggs, and schmoos.
A short drive after the hike brought us to the Williamsburg Snack Bar where I had a lobster roll with sweet potato fries, others had fish and chips, steak sandwiches, New England clam chowder, fried onion rings, and other not so healthy things but with great pitchers of ice water. As it was Joe’s 70th birthday, Lissa had made him a perfectly devine chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream filling and a chocolate buttercream icing with dried Michigan cherries that Joe always brings back to us after his family visits to Michigan. Another great day with snow falling hard at times. Supposed to be real cold tonight. Got wood? Penny
