3/4/21 – Hawley Trail, Hawley MA

2/12 miles through Hawley Forest on good trails; temperature in the 20s with wind and snow flurries. Spikes rather than snowshoes. We kept moving along to keep “warm”. But there’s always something to identify or wonder about, and there was a lot of that today along with lots of fun (as always on the Thursday Continue reading

  • 2/11/21 – Terry Blount Trail, Hatfield MA

2/11/21 – Terry Blount Trail, Hatfield MA

We broke trail through freshly fallen snow on hilly land with glacial rocks, chestnut oaks, hemlocks, mountain laurel, and lots more – even some Witch Hazel.. It was really cold, so I had to think about taking off gloves to take photos. At this time of year, one hike starts to look like “last weeks Continue reading

    2/4/21 – Hatfield MA

What a wonderful day on wonderful snow. We started out watching a friendly and stalwart Nordic skier with two “lap dogs” in tow. I do hope all went better for him than it had started. As for us, we had a great romp on great snow with great side excursions on some great rocks! I Continue reading

1/28/21 – William Cullen Bryant Estate Rivulet and Old Growth Forest Trails, Cummington MA

What a beautiful day for heading into the woods. Snowshoes on fresh unbroken snow, 24 degrees, some sun, some falling snow, some blue – or was it violet?- sky. We’ve hiked these trails many times and in all seasons of our 8 years of hiking together. Today they were at their winter’s best. Tony’s dog Continue reading

  • 1/21/21 – “The Dog Park”, Northampton MA

1/21/21 – “The Dog Park”, Northampton MA

Great hike, great hiking weather: 29 degrees, no wind, snowing, beautiful. I’ve never been here before and will surely go again….take some of you with me. It’s INERESTiNG as well as beautiful. Topography has scattered remains of glacial eskers. Varied hardwood forest and many trails, some along the along the wide and peaceful Mill river. Continue reading

  • 1/7/21 – DAR State Forest, Cummington MA

1/7/21 – DAR State Forest, Cummington MA

(The first photo is there by mistake…..but hope you all had a Merry Christmas. ) At 32 degrees and with wind off the lake it was a nippy hike today, but it was also lots of fun. The lake had a lot of activities happening on it: ice fishing, ice skating, nordic skiing, hiking!, and Continue reading

  • 12/31/20 – Montague Climbing Rocks, Montague MA

12/31/20 – Montague Climbing Rocks, Montague MA

A beautiful hike through varied terrain and forest growth with 4 fast flowing, slippery rocked, small streams to cross. But no one went in or even got wet feet. The trails were deep with mostly various kinds of oak leaves and a combination of frozen and slightly thawed surfaces. Two friendly young rock climbers with Continue reading

  • 12/14/20 – North Hadley MA

    12/14/20 – North Hadley MA

We hiked on Mt. Warner, one of our “go to” hikes. (So of course I forgot my camera!) Happily, these photos have come in from hiker Lissa so here’s a short hike report. COVID is spiking here in Western MA, as is deer hunting, therefore all the hunter’s orange clothing and COVID masks. It was Continue reading

  • 10/31/20 – Notchview Nordic Ski Area, Windsor MA

10/31/20 – Notchview Nordic Ski Area, Windsor MA

It rained hard on Thursday, snowed on Friday, so we hiked on Saturday. It was a day to celebrate!! The snow had clung to the trees and the scenery was unexpectedly beautiful. I noticed a beginner trail for children (“The Kinder Trail”) and with luck Claudia and Paulie will get to ski there one of Continue reading

  • 10/22/20 – Buffam Falls Conservation Area, Pelham MA

10/22/20 – Buffam Falls Conservation Area, Pelham MA

This is an incredibly beautiful place! I think I was so taken with it that I forgot to get many photos. I’d never been to Buffam Falls but will surely return. (With you, I hope!) After nearly two hours of hiking we found the perfect lunch spot overlooking a reservoir. From that reservoir, the wide Continue reading
